Real: We have no Ronaldo deal

Real Madrid have "categorically denied" media reports they have a pre-contract agreement to sign Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

Madrid have long been linked with a move for the Portugal international and there has been speculation in the media that the Spanish giants already have a deal in place for the 24-year-old.

Reports in the media claimed former Madrid president Ramon Calderon had negotiated a pre-contract agreement with Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes, but the Spanish giants have released a statement denying any such deal is in place.

"In relation to the reports that have appeared in several media in the last few hours regarding the alleged signing of the Manchester United player Cristiano Ronaldo, the club want to categorically deny said information," the statement read.

"There exists no pre-agreement, neither with the player, nor with his agent, nor with Manchester United.

"As is well known, Real Madrid tried to sign the player last summer and Manchester United made it clear that the player was not transferable."

Shift from Employee to Entreprenuer

Being an entrepreneur (running your own business) you should look into the both sides of the coin.

What you'll be missing:
  • Paid salary
No more stable (or increasing) monthly salary from your boss. You gotta pay yourself. If you don't make it, think of soya sauce with plain rice to be your meals.

  • Paid holidays / trips
No more paid holidays or paid trips. Now start save & pay for your next trip if you lucky to get a holiday.

  • Office utilities
Start enjoy paying the bills. Forget about paid travel expenses & entertainment fees by your boss. Used to so nice to have a hand phone as you call when you like it, eh?

  • Backup
When you fail, you got your boss to fall back to. Now think of there is no one you can lean on when things go wrong. All things come to lean on you.

  • Fix working hour
Forget about 9 to 5. Forget about a relaxing job. Enterpreneur works 3x harder than employee. Work relaxly on weekend (Friday, Sat) before Sunday? Not anymore. You may typing proposal when others are sleeping nicely.

  • Insurance, benefits
Start looking out those insurance or retirement plans. You have to worry it not for yourself. Self pitty doesn't work here.

  • MC
You can have MC but would your customer allow you to? Start learning to talk professionally on the phone while you lying half dead on the bed.

What you'll be seeing:
  1. You get what you give
You will come to see to believe. You'll understand what means "what comes around goes around". How much you gonna make is how much you putting in. Hard work always pay off -- may not be in money form alone. For God sake the return is always more than you expect if you stop thinking how much you shall make out of it.

  2. Commitment
You will see interest, money, skill & luck alone ain't enough. Commitment counts. Commitment bring you motivation, give you preserverance to go on again & again when you fall.

  3. See better
A lot of things in life you don't see when you're kept protected in a cage (office box). You'll see more & better when you're on the road. You will come to appreciate every little things that come around. You will appreciate others more.

  4. Flexi hour
Yes it is true but mis-interpreted by most. Flexi hour here means you are still working even on the rest hours, such as midnite, lunch / dinner time. But you may be having coffee too at cafe when others working in their office box.

  5. Little details
You have to pay attention to among all things & very little details. You will understand why little things make a difference.

  6. Care for others
You will learn to care about others or you are out. Back to (1) what you want others do to you you do to others. Customers will appreciate you when you care for them. At the mean time you need family & friends to care about you otherwise your business & life are out.

  7. Self discipline
You gotta ensure your work get done. Customers do not beg or wait for you to have "mood" to sell them what they want.

  8. Take risk
No risk mean no venture. Again you learn to fall back on yourself when things failed. That come strategy planning and what make entrepreneur fun. You decide where you want to go instead a boss decide where you go.

  9. Patience
You need patience to rearch your destination. Before profit surface there are ups & downs, and possibiliy no income.

  10. Control & achievement
You get all the rewards for your achievement. Believe me, point (1) is real. The result is always more than you expect if you really worked hard. Basically you are controlling your future. You decide where you go.

Well the rest are no jam, no silly dress-up and no silly direction to follow. There may not be all worked out as expected, but again, why not?

Enjoy the ride in life.

17 Reasons to on WWW

I have been asked numerous times for why they should put on their business on the Internet. Here are the classical golden reasons, and it's time for you to act now.

  1. To establish a presence
Whatever your business is, you can't ignore the 200 million (still growing) people who already have access to the Internet

  2. To network
Webpage advertising will act as your business card, telling what you can do to thousands even millions of potential clients 24 hours a day. In fact, it is more than just a piece of business card and you can do it inexpensively and simply on the Internet

  3. To make business information available
Information can be updated regularly, keeping the customers well informed of your latest products and happenings

  4. To serve your customer
Allows customer to check it against a database that tells him what is available for him and help him do his job better

  5. To release time sensitive materials
Information can be made available at midnight or any time at your command, with all related materials such as photo, bios etc. which is not so possible for press

  6. To sell things
Unlike the telephone as a communication tool to sell your products, the Internet will enable customer to know more about your products easily as it combines graphics, text and possibly video & sound

  7. To make pictures, sound and video available
The Internet allows you to add sound, pictures, sound, movies to your company's info which brochure can't

  8. To reach a highly desirable demographic market
The demographic of World Wide Web user is the highest mass market available

  9. To answer frequently asked questions (FAQ)
No time is wasted on phone call, as customer can access information over and over again

  10. To open international market
With Website, you can open up a dialogue with the International market as simple as with the company next door

  11. To create a 24 hour service
A Website serves the client, customer and partner 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

  12. To make changing information available quickly
Sometimes, information changes before it get off the press; however e-publishing made real-time changes possible according to your needs

  13. To allow feedback from customers
With a Website, you can ask for feedback and get it instantaneously from the customer with no extra cost

  14. To test market on new products & services
Once you are in the Internet, you are able to know the response from the customers about your new products & services

  15. To reach the education & youth market
Most schools and universities have already offer Internet access to their students

  16. To reach the specialized market
Through Internet advertising, even the most narrowly defined interest group will be presented in large numbers (let's consider 5% of 200 million users)

  17. To serve your local market
There is enough local customers with Internet access to make it worth your while to consider Internet marketing

Again, setting up a Website is a long term investment for your company. It helps serve your customers better. Remember that a happy customer will keep coming back to you.

Starting an Internet small business

"My area has a shortage of jobs and we have severe unemployment problems. I believe the only chance for me is to start my own business through Internet, but I have little start up capital. What should I do?" This could be some of voices you hear nowadays, but nevertheless you still have the opportunity to do it.

Lately companies that get the headlines are Dot.com start-ups with millions of dollars in venture capital. But it's quite possible to grow a good business on the Web with low initial investment -- it just takes longer, or may be a little bit more hard work. Here are some ideas:

  • Define the area of business
Find an business area that still gaps waiting to be filled. Some big companies may think the profit is too small for them to feed their payroll -- it could be an opportunity for you.

  • Business plan
Develop a business plan to meet the need you've identified. Focus on selling goods or services as your main income source, relying on affiliate programs and advertising only as secondary revenue streams.

  • Get the right people
If you don't have all the resources you need, find people in your area and form a small company, pooling your talents and capital. Friends and family members are good source of manpower if you really look into it.

  • Website
Find a local designer to build a website with a professional look. Don't rely on your own talents here if you are not a Web developer. Outsource the development, but perform regular maintenance yourself. An interactive website can serve as your customer service frontdoor, 24 hours a day.

Look for inexpensive ways to advertise. Subscribe to the search engines and directory listing sites, link exchange with other websites, or may be spend a little as ad on local small-scale magazines. You can ask for exhange of services too and they would happy to work with you.

  • Focus on the core business
Concentrate your efforts on the core business. Always makes quality delivery of products and services. Good products / services is key to gain loyal customers. Put yourself in their shoes, treat them as you treat yourself. They will come back for more.

Making e-commerce as free as free can be

One of the first lessons of life is that there's no such thing as free. Yet the Internet always seems to be on the verge of making that rule as obsolete as a 300-baud modem. Here, after all, is where all sorts of stuff costs nothing beyond the usual $20-a-month access fee--zillions of Web pages crammed with text and graphics, numberless discussion groups, blazingly fast search engines, lifetime e-mail accounts, even inter-national telephone calls.

But surely e-commerce capabilities cost something, right? They did until July, when Bigstep.com began offering to get masses of small businesses on the Web for almost nothing. That includes displaying catalogs, taking orders, publishing customer newsletters, analyzing Web activity, building relationships and a lot more that small businesses couldn't afford before.

Having seen the success Web-based community sites such as Geo-Cities and Xoom have had in hosting individuals' Web sites, Bigstep set out to apply essentially the same business model to e-commerce. "Big businesses were benefiting [from e-commerce] a great deal," says Andrew Beebe, 27, Bigstep's CEO and co-founder, "[but] there were a lot of people who were about to be left out."

This is no pre-fab electronic mall scheme, either. Each Bigstep member gets to design, construct and maintain his or her own Web site, with soft-ware residing on Bigstep's servers interactively walking them through each step of the process. And later, when it's time to blast out a customer newsletter, Bigstep's server will provide a list of the customers who visited the site and stats about what each one ordered or seemed interested in.

Bigstep is out to make a profit itself, of course, and it hasn't wrung out every cost of doing business on the Web. It plans to sell ads on its site--but not on members' individual pages--and charge for premium add-ons. "What we realized," says Beebe, "is that we would take a risk and place our bets on small businesses. Why charge at the door if everybody's going to be successful? Those that succeed will be interested in buying more services."

The company will process incoming orders at no charge, but to collect credit-card payments, Bigstep members must establish their own online merchant accounts. However, Bigstep has cut a deal with Card Service International that lets members maintain such accounts for a mere $14.95 a month. And members who want to have their own Web addresses instead of being listed under Bigstep's umbrella must pay the standard $70 registration fee, but Bigstep will handle the registration at cost, with no markup for itself.

"Free" still may not be entirely free, but Bigstep seems to live up to its name in approaching that goal.

Top 10 Signs She's Made For You

All of your life, you have been the single guy. You have never been able to envision yourself settling down, let alone trust women, but suddenly you meet this gift from heaven and she makes you wonder what could have possibly hit you across the head. So how do you know she's heaven-sent? Here are the Top 10 signs she's made for you.

10. You trust her
You have had difficulty trusting women your whole life. Then one day, you realize that you can trust the woman standing beside you. For the first time in your life, you don't think twice about opening up about personal matters or letting her take care of important objects; you know that you can turn your back to her and not worry. You even want to introduce her to your friends and family.

9. She gets along with your friends
She meets your friends one by one, and you get the eerie impression that she likes them and could actually get along with them. Better yet, she understands and encourages you to spend time with them and have your own life.

8. She has fun with your crazy family
You cringe at the thought of her meeting grandpa Joe and hearing about his sordid tales... but when the big day comes, you realize that she actually finds his stories funny. She seems to care for your parents and likes your siblings. She loves your friends and family.

7. You forget your friends
You always chose hanging out with the boys first and the girlfriend second, only now, playing pool and having some drinks with your buds isn't as interesting as it used to be. You prefer to see her and pass up the friends.

6. You forget about your ex
You've been thinking about the ex-girlfriend for some time now, until you meet the goddess that is her. From the time you first laid eyes on her, you seem to have finally turned a new page. You still look at other women, but it's just "looking".

Yup, she may just be the one...

5. You get mad when others debase her
Whether it's your friends, family or some stranger, you get irritated when people say mean things about your woman. You contemplate smashing their skulls, but opt to make them eat their words instead.

4. Chemical balance
You have so much chemistry oozing between the two of you that you have no choice but to give into temptation. She is on your mind at all times, and every time you go shopping alone, you end up buying her something. You can stare at one another and not say anything for hours; you have achieved "the comfortable silence".

3. You ask yourself where she has been all your life
She wants to know all about you -- the good and the bad -- and is not turned off by the latter. You envision yourself married to her and wonder what your kids would look like. While this thought would have made you nauseous years ago, it now brings a smile to your face.

2. You treat her
Your idea of cooking may have been delivery or microwave meals, but suddenly you'd love to fix up a five-course meal for her, serve her, wine and dine her, and then take her in your arms. You were once a cheapskate, but now spend all your discretionary income on her. You even clean your pad when you know she's coming over.

1. You find yourself unable to concentrate
Being productive at work has become increasingly difficult, listening attentively in class is a daunting task, and all you can think about is when you will see her next. As pathetic as it may be, you cannot wait to see her again, and you even consider calling her to let her know just that.

Philosophy Of Success

If you think of failure, you will fail.

If you do not have the heart to achieve, you will not succeed.

If you want to win, you must not let the word "failure" enter your mind, or sucess will never shine on you.

If you are not working seriously, you will fail.

By observing nature and the universe, it has been found that success originates from one's own will power.

Everything is controlled by the human psychological condition.

If you wish to fall behind, you will fall behind.

If you aspire for the highest position, before you can succeed, you must have the belief "I will make it".

Life is a constant battle, we do not only need to be strong and fast to win, as all the people who eventually achieve success, are the people who sincerely believe that "I will make it".

Ronaldo hint for staying with United.. Viva Ronaldo!!!

Cristiano Ronaldo beamed with pride as he reflected on clinching the third Premier League title of his United career.
The Portuguese winger, United's top scorer for a third successive season, revelled in the post-match celebrations after the Reds' draw with Arsenal had given the reigning champions an unassailable lead at the head of the table.

"It's unbelievable, it's a special day," Ronaldo told MUTV. "We've won the league again and now we get to celebrate with our families. I'm enjoying it a lot. It's a fantastic achievement. It's not easy to win three times, the lads worked for that and it's a special, special moment. We have to enjoy the moment."

The Reds' triumph secured an 18th league title, equalling the longstanding record of Liverpool, but Ronaldo admits United need only concentrate on winning more silverware.

"We don't need to care about other teams," he said. "It's always good to be on the top, and we are in a good moment. We've won a few things and this club needs to carry on. It doesn't matter which players are here or which coach is here, the mentality of this club is always to win. I'm looking forward, and proud to be in the history of this team."

With one half of last season's Double now safely retained, United's attentions will now switch to overcoming Barcelona in the Champions League final. Should the Reds reign in Rome, Ronaldo believes this campaign can be held in the fondest regard, admitting: "If we win that then it's an unbelievable year."

Very Sad Story For Tevez... :( Please Stay

Carlos Tevez has said he knows he will leave Manchester United at the end of the season and feels he has been treated badly.

The Argentine is reaching the end of a two-year lease from his rights-holders MSI, and is upset that the club have not acted more decisively to secure his services permanently.

Tevez appeared to wave goodbye to the Old Trafford crowd when he was substituted during Saturday's 0-0 draw against Arsenal, which clinched the Premier League title for United.

Fans booed Tevez's removal from the action, and after the game a noisy protest took place outside the ground calling for United to keep the 25-year-old.

Tevez told Argentinian TV station TYC: "I know that I am not going to continue at Manchester United. I feel that they have lacked respect towards me. It's not about whether they pay £5 million more or £5m less, but I feel I have been badly treated."

"There are ways in which the club is managed that I don't understand. When you don't agree with the manager in how the club is run... I don't have faith in a lot of things that happen here.

"I've been here for two years and the directors have never come to speak to me. Not once have I had a meeting with them.

"Therefore, it's best that I leave the club so as not to clash with Alex Ferguson and the directors. Neither do I understand why I don't play in the team.

"I've asked (adviser) Kia (Joorabchian) not to speak to me about offers during the next 10 days. I want to concentrate only on the final matches that we have to play. Afterwards, I've got a month to take a decision and choose where to go."

However, United chief executive David Gill said he and manager Alex Ferguson wanted Tevez to stay.

He told the BBC that he had met MSI chief Joorabchian in midweek and wanted to strike a deal "if the economic conditions are right". Gill also confirmed that United would have to pay around £25 million for him.

Hiddink: Cool United deserve credit

Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink paid tribute to Manchester United's coolness under pressure as the Reds prepare to retain their title.

United need just a point from Saturday's home game with Arsenal to hang on to the Barclays Premier League crown.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side held their nerve under pressure from Liverpool and Chelsea to stay at the summit and Hiddink says they should be congratulated for doing so.

"Every team in this tough league will experience some period of 'less performances', which is normal," said Hiddink. "In that period, the quality of United was not to panic, to stick to their jobs.

"They could cope with the pressure because there was more pressure on Chelsea and Liverpool not to lose points, which we did with one defeat and a draw. They have a lot of experienced players, a lot of experience with their manager.

"They did not panic. Credit to them. They know how to play 'championship'. They are used to that. Many new teams who want to become champions might become a bit nervous on the edge of becoming champions. They did not."

"Why not get paid to leave a comment?"

Transfers - Gossip Shop: Ronaldinho to City

What Manchester City need is a striker. A striker like Didier Drogba, who is being linked with a £15m summer move to Eastlands.

The Drog might be 31, but there is nobody better at playing as a lone target man and banging in 25 goals a season. For the same price as Roque Santa Cruz, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan would be mad not to.

What Manchester City do not need is another fancy-dan Brazilian attacking midfielder who won't track back. Another fancy-dan Brazilian attacking midfielder who won't track back like Ronaldinho, who is being linked with a £10m summer move to Eastlands.

The one-time best player in the world has failed to nail down a regular place in the Milan first team, having proved incompatible with fellow fancy-dan Brazilian attacking midfielder who won't track back Kaka - another City target, obviously.

City narrowly* failed to land Ronaldinho last summer, but the player's reputation has plummeted far enough to make the sight of him in light blue next season sound feasible.

(*comprehensively)

Chelsea are growing tired of Carlo Ancelotti's umming and aahing about whether to quit Milan and move to Stamford Bridge.

Roman Abramovich is reportedly ready to ditch his first choice and turn to Frank Rijkaard, of whom little has been heard since leaving Barcelona at the end of last season.

Rijkaard's coaching record is patchy. Yes, he took Barcelona to two Liga title and won the Champions League to boot, but he also got Sparta Rotterdam relegated.

Whatever, he seems certain to bring an attacking philosophy to the club. Although you could argue Big Phil Scolari did the same thing and was fired on account of Chelsea's wretched defending.

Having been linked with Emmanuel Adebayor yesterday, Chelsea appear poised to employ Russia wing-back Yuri Zhirkov to fire crosses at the Togolese's forehead.

On the subject of yet another Brazilian flair player, Deco could be the latest big name Brazilian to return home if he gets sent to Corinthians on loan. Yes, GS knows he plays for Portugal, but he's Brazilian. OK?

Antonio Valencia's sparkling display for Wigan against Manchester United has, apparently, convinced both United and Real Madrid that the winger is worth £20m.

Tottenham loaned Chris Gunter out to Nottingham Forest earlier this season, and now the Tricky Trees want to make the deal permanent.

After watching Lukasz Fabianski's series of calamitous displays, Arsenal gaffer Arsene Wenger is on the lookout for another goalkeeper, and is set to give a trial to Independiente's Damian Emiliano Martinez.

Ferdinand will make final...

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has played down concerns that Rio Ferdinand might be forced out of the Champions League final against Barcelona.

Ferdinand missed both the Manchester derby and Wednesday's win at Wigan after injuring a calf muscle in the semi-final triumph over Arsenal.

"He won't play tomorrow (against Arsenal on Saturday) but he should be fit for next Sunday's game at Hull and I am sure he will be available for the final," he said.

"It is one of those calf niggles that usually take 10 days to two weeks (to recover from).

"Other than his work in the gymnasium he is not training at the moment."

Other than Ferdinand, plus long-term casualties Owen Hargreaves and Wes Brown, Ferguson has a fully-fit squad at his disposal as United look to secure at least a point against Arsenal that will ensure they win another Premier League title.

It means changes are certain from Wednesday night, with Darren Fletcher, Ryan Giggs and Carlos Tevez among those set to get a place in the starting line-up, with Ben Foster standing by if Ferguson decides that Edwin van der Sar needs a break.

"I will freshen up the team from Wednesday because it was a really gruelling game on a very heavy pitch," said Ferguson.

Providence mayor wants to tax college students

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The mayor of Providence wants to slap a $150-per-semester tax on the 25,000 full-time students at Brown University and three other private colleges in the city, saying they use resources and should help ease the burden on struggling taxpayers.

Mayor David Cicilline (sis-ah-LEEN-ee) said the fee would raise between $6 million and $8 million a year for the city, which is facing a $17 million deficit.

If enacted, it would apparently be the first time a U.S. city has directly taxed students just for being enrolled.

The proposal is still in its early stages. But it has riled some students, who say it would unfairly saddle them with the city's financial woes and overlook their volunteer work and other contributions, including money spent in restaurants, bars and stores.

"We want to support the city as best we can, but financially is not really what we can afford to give," said Heather Lee, president of the Brown Graduate Student Council. "We're more able to provide labor, we're more able to apply the things that we're learning in the classroom, than we are to write a $300 check."

Cities often look for revenue from universities to compensate for their tax-exempt status, and many schools already make voluntary payments to local governments. Providence's four private schools — Brown, Providence College, Johnson & Wales University and the Rhode Island School of Design — agreed in 2003 to pay the city nearly $50 million over 20 years.

The idea of a student head tax has been floated before in other cities, generally to start discussions about collecting money from universities in lieu of taxes.

But Tony Pals, spokesman for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, said he knows of no city that charges students a direct fee.

"The bottom line is, a tax like this has never gone into effect," Pals said. "The timing is also unfortunate, given the significant amount of budget-cutting that institutions have had to go through because of the recession."

The four schools generate more than $1 billion a year in economic activity, said Daniel Egan, president of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Rhode Island. They employ nearly 9,000 people in a city of roughly 172,000.

"We think the indirect and direct benefit of students within the community would outweigh any costs," Egan said.

Cicilline's office said there is no study showing how much students cost Providence for the use of police and fire protection and other services. The city points out that the private schools' property, valued at more than $1.7 billion, is tax-exempt.

Many college students are already involved in tutoring, arts education and mentoring for public school students. Providence College, for instance, offers student volunteers to staff after-school programs, and Brown is raising money for a $10 million endowment to help the city school system.

Even so, Cicilline said everyone should be expected to help the city through this economic crisis. He said he wants students to have a vested interest in their city instead of seeing themselves as visitors just passing through.

"It's really about a shared commitment to the well-being of your community that you're a part of," the mayor said. "Everyone should be doing their part and coming to the table."

Students at Rhode Island College, a state school in the city, and the Providence campus of the University of Rhode Island would be exempt.

A city head tax on students would need approval from both the City Council and state lawmakers. However, a similar measure failed in the state Legislature in 2005, and Rhode Island's colleges are likely to fight this proposal, too.

Josephine Nash, a Brown junior from New York City, said the idea seems reasonable, provided it doesn't overly burden students on financial aid. "I do spend the majority of my year here, and I do use the services of the city," she said.

But Susette Holman, a Johnson & Wales freshman also from New York, said her mother works seven days a week, sometimes 14 hours a day, to put her through school. "I have three sisters at home, so how's she going to be able to provide an extra tuition fee?" she asked.

University administrators also object, saying students and their families spend years saving for college and shouldn't have to bear more costs. Tuition at Brown costs nearly $40,000 a year, with about 40 percent of undergraduates receiving financial aid.

"Given at least the rhetoric of trying to retain students, be a place that's attractive to students and young people shortly after college, it just seemed counterintuitive to at least the students I talked to," said Richard Spies, Brown's executive vice president for planning.

Obama seeks to block release of abuse photos

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama declared Monday he would try to block the court-ordered release of photos showing U.S. troops abusing prisoners, abruptly reversing his position out of concern the pictures would "further inflame anti-American opinion" and endanger U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The White House had said last month it would not oppose an appeals court ruling that set a May 28 deadline for releasing dozens of photos from military investigations of alleged misconduct.

But American commanders in the war zones have expressed deep concern about fresh damage the photos might do, especially as the U.S. tries to wind down the Iraq war and step up operations against the Taliban and al-Qaida in Afghanistan.

When photos emerged in 2004 from the infamous U.S.-run Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, showing grinning American soldiers posing with detainees — some of the prisoners naked, some being held on leashes — the pictures caused a huge anti-American backlash around the globe, particularly in the Muslim world.

Obama, explaining his change of heart on releasing the other photos, said they had already served their purpose in investigations of "a small number of individuals." Those cases were all concluded by 2004, and the president said "the individuals who were involved have been identified, and appropriate actions have been taken."

The Pentagon conducted 200 investigations into alleged abuse connected with the photos in question. The administration did not provide an immediate accounting of how they turned out.

"This is not a situation in which the Pentagon has concealed or sought to justify inappropriate action," Obama said of the photos. "In fact, the most direct consequence of releasing them, I believe, would be to further inflame anti-American opinion and to put our troops in greater danger."

Spokesman Robert Gibbs said release of photos from the cases would merely "provide, in some ways, a sensationalistic portion of that investigation."

Obama said later, "I want to emphasize that these photos that were requested in this case are not particularly sensational, especially when compared to the painful images that we remember from Abu Ghraib."

Still, he said he had made it newly clear: "Any abuse of detainees is unacceptable. It is against our values. It endangers our security. It will not be tolerated."

The effort to keep the photos from becoming public represented a sharp reversal from Obama's repeated pledges for open government, and in particular from his promise to be forthcoming with information that courts have ruled should be publicly available.

As such, it invited criticism from the more liberal segments of the Democratic Party, which want a full accounting — and even redress — for what they see as the misdeeds of the Bush administration.

"The decision to not release the photographs makes a mockery of President Obama's promise of transparency and accountability," said ACLU attorney Amrit Singh, who had argued and won the case before the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York. "It is essential that these photographs be released so that the public can examine for itself the full scale and scope of prisoner abuse that was conducted in its name."

On Capitol Hill, Republicans welcomed the change, however. A military group also said it was relieved.

"These photos represent isolated incidents where the offending servicemen and women have already been prosecuted," said Brian Wise, executive director of Military Families United. "There is no good that can come from releasing these photos."

The reactions were a reverse of what happened after Obama's decision last month to release documents that detailed brutal interrogation techniques used by the CIA against terror suspects. Those also came out in response to an ACLU lawsuit, and his decision then brought harsh and still-continuing criticism from Republicans.

This time he's kicking the decision back into court, where his administration still may be forced into releasing the photos.

Indeed, there is some evidence that the administration has little case left.

Gibbs said the president instructed administration lawyers to challenge the photos' release based on the national security implications. He said that argument was not used before.

But the Bush administration already argued against the release on national security grounds — and lost.

"It is plainly insufficient to claim that releasing documents could reasonably be expected to endanger some unspecified member of a group so vast as to encompass all United States troops, coalition forces, and civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan," the three-judge appeals panel wrote in September 2008.

The Justice Department had concluded that further appeal would probably be fruitless, and last month, Gibbs said the president had concurred with that conclusion, though without commenting on whether Obama would support the release if not pressed by a court case.

Thus, the administration assured a federal judge that it would turn over the material by May 28, including one batch of 21 photos and another of 23 images. The government also told the judge it was "processing for release a substantial number of other images," for a total expected to be in the hundreds.

The court also has already rejected another argument the president and his spokesman made, that the photos add little of value to the public's understanding of the issue. "This contention disregards FOIA's central purpose of furthering governmental accountability," the appeals court panel concluded in the same decision.

Obama's own Jan. 21 memorandum on honoring the Freedom of Information Act also takes a different line. "The government should not keep information confidential merely because public officials might be embarrassed by disclosure, because errors and failures might be revealed, or because of speculative or abstract fears," it said.

The president informed Gen. Ray Odierno, commander of U.S. troops in Iraq, of his decision during a White House meeting on Tuesday.

Gen. David Petraeus, the senior commander for both wars, had also weighed in against the release, as had Gen. David McKiernan, the outgoing top general in Afghanistan.

Military commanders' concerns were most intense with respect to Afghanistan. The release would coincide with the spring thaw that usually heralds the year's toughest fighting there — and as thousands of new U.S. troops head into Afghanistan's volatile south.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he had once held the view that it might be best to "go through the pain once" and release a large batch of images now, since so many are at issue in multiple lawsuits. But he — and the president — changed their minds when Odierno and McKiernan expressed "very great worry that release of these photographs will cost American lives," Gates said before the House Armed Services Committee.

"That's all it took for me," Gates said.

Fergie wants to keep Tevez

Sir Alex Ferguson insists he wants Carlos Tevez to stay at Old Trafford after the Argentinian scored the first goal in Manchester United's 2-1 win at Wigan.

Tevez equalised with an impudent back-heel after Hugo Rodallega had given the Latics a first-half lead before Michael Carrick scored an 87th-minute winner to leave United only a point away from retaining their Barclays Premier League title.

Tevez's future has been in the spotlight over the past few days, with the former West Ham player quoted in a Sunday newspaper saying he does not expect to stay at the champions.

However, following the victory at the JJB Stadium, Ferguson told Sky Sports 1: "He is a fantastic player.

"He knows I want him to stay. I had a chat with him today and (chief executive) David Gill has had meetings with him.

"I'm sorry I have to keep on going on about this, it has never changed. (The fact) we're not negotiating with a football club is the problem - we'll see."

Tevez takes United to brink of title..Come on Red!!!

Carlos Tevez inspired a second-half comeback as Manchester United moved to the brink of the Premier League title with a 2-1 win at Wigan.
The Argentine came off the bench to cancel out Hugo Rodallega's opening goal in spectacular fashion, before Michael Carrick netted a cool winner five minutes from time.

United need just one point from their final two games to retain the title, and can do so in front of their Old Trafford crowd against Arsenal on Saturday.

Tevez, who appears set to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, has been the subject of fevered transfer speculation in recent days, but it was his contribution on the pitch that left United fans open-mouthed.

Having started the match on the bench, the 25-year-old produced an outrageously inventive back flick to turn in a low Carrick ball just after the hour mark.

Tevez has complained about United's reluctance to turn a two-year loan into a permanent deal, but if he had played all season like he has the last two games - he scored a fine goal in the Manchester derby on Sunday - perhaps his future at Old Trafford might already be secured.

The bald truth is that six Premier League goals in 29 appearances are not the work of a £30 million striker. Yet if he does go, this goal will be some parting gift.

On a wet night at the JJB Stadium, United missed a host of chances before Rodallega's opportunistic opener. Wayne Rooney had the best of those in the 10th minute, when he peeled away unmarked in the box to meet Dimitar Berbatov's clipped cross.

Yet somehow the England striker headed wide with Richard Kingson's goal at his mercy.

A minute later a clearly furious Rooney started another attack, and United worked the ball around magnificently through Paul Scholes, Berbatov and Cristiano Ronaldo to Carrick, who lifted his shot just over.

But United were not alone in their profligacy. With less than two minutes on the clock Antonio Valencia nicked the ball past Jonny Evans - still standing in for the injured Rio Ferdinand - and raced clean through on goal.

But the Ecuadorean sent his attempted chip just wide, possibly distracted by the presence of Nemanja Vidic on his shoulder.

Another Evans slip let Rodallega through in similar fashion, and although he got his shot on target from 20 yards it never seriously tested Edwin van der Sar.

There was nothing the goalkeeper could do on 28 minutes, when Rodallega and Vidic jumped for a header, the ball looped up and both players momentarily lost their bearings, but the Colombian reacted quickest and fired a low shot past Van der Sar at the near post.

A livid Vidic thought he had been impeded, and his backchat to referee Rob Styles earned him a stern talking-to. Ronaldo's unhappiness at being denied what he deemed a clear penalty added to United's foul mood, and they left the field for half-time under a collective storm cloud.

The Portuguese was down in the Wigan box again after the break, having lost his balance following a Maynor Figueroa challenge.

Alex Ferguson has grown to tolerate Ronaldo's pouting, but the 24-year-old's histrionics while the ball was still in play and in the Wigan area will not have pleased his manager.

Ronaldo, having scored free-kicks in his last two matches, hit three poor efforts straight into the Wigan wall and produced several other wayward shots.

What seemed like a night to forget came good just three minutes after Tevez's introduction just before the hour.

Carrick drove a diagonal attempted shot in from the right, the Argentine had no time to set himself but did not have to, propelling the ball into the bottom-right corner with a flick of his right boot.

As time wound down, Carrick made another telling contribution. John O'Shea played a low ball to the edge of the box from the right and the midfielder guided a fine left-foot shot into the top-left corner
